Karen Fryefield, M.D.

My favorite part of being a pediatrician is forming lasting relationships with families and watching children grow into confident, unique individuals. I enjoy working collaboratively with families to find thoughtful, practical solutions that fit each child’s needs and circumstances. I strive to provide care grounded in evidence while recognizing that every family is different.

I grew up in Eugene, Oregon, as the youngest of three girls. Much of my childhood was spent trying to keep up with my older sisters, which led to plenty of cuts, bumps, and bruises along the way. Fortunately, my mom was a pediatrician, so many of those injuries could be patched up at home. My family loved spending time outdoors together, especially swimming, hiking, and backpacking during Oregon summers.

I attended Smith College in Massachusetts before returning to Oregon for medical school. During my training, I realized how much I loved caring for children, adolescents, and their families, and I continue to find supporting families through all stages of childhood deeply rewarding.

My wife and I live in Portland with our children and our sweet cat, Trudy. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, traveling, and working on jigsaw puzzles.
